Chris and Debra Whitman

Why I became a foster parent:
I feel that I am able to care for children whose own family is in need of help to deal with stresses and issues in their lives. We as a family can provide unconditional love and appropriate discipline to a child in need. I also feel that my family can be a model to other families in need of making changes. The love, structure, fun and discipline that my family and I can show others will be a help to a child in learning how families can function.

What I would look for in an Erie County foster parent:
I think a foster parent must show love, empathy towards the natural parents, patience and the ability to adapt. Foster parents also need to be understanding, have “common sense” and be clear on the usual goal of “family reunification.” The family should be involved, optimistic by nature yet based in reality.

Why I became a foster parent:
I became a foster parent because I love children. I believe everyone has a special ‘something’ they are good at; whether its being a doctor, priest, mechanic, teacher or child care worker. I am good and enjoy being a mom. Most of the time my kids would agree! I enjoy children and believe we have a loving, happy, fun, stable family life with room to share, even if it’s for a short time.

What I would look for in an Erie County foster parent:
I believe a foster family has to be patient, accepting, flexible yet stable, good listeners, non-judgmental, able to work as part of a team, good huggers, fun, happy and very loving.
