  Children with special medical needs deserve to live in a family like all other children. They need to experience the loving and happy childhood that can be provided in a home like yours. What each child needs is to live in a family who loves and cares for him.

Who can be medical foster parents?

Foster parents can be married or single, own their own home or rent. They do not need to have previous medical or nursing skills because all training necessary to care for a child is provided. Medical foster parents must be able to work with; other professionals in the community. Most importantly, medical foster parents want to love and care about a child who really needs them.

What are these children like?

Children in medical foster care can have mild or severe medical needs. They may have special equipment like a wheelchair or monitor. They may have asthma, developmental disabilities, apnea, pre-natal exposure to drugs and alcohol or other medical diagnoses. They can be newborn infants or older children. They are children who are medically ready to experience family life with you.

All training, medical supplies and equipment needed to care for your medically needy foster child will be provided. Respite is available and medical program staff will provide support to you during the child's placement in your home.

Foster parents of a medically needy child receive training to meet the needs of the child placed in their home. Erie County Office of Children and Youth will have 24 hour support available to you when you foster parent a medically needy child. Financial reimbursement, as well as mileage and a yearly clothing allowance. Personal professional nursing care can be provided for the child in your home when state guidelines are met for the service.
