Children with special medical needs deserve to live in a family like all other
children. They need to experience the loving and happy childhood
that can be provided in a home like yours. What each child needs is
to live in a family who loves and cares for him.
Who can be medical foster parents?
Foster parents can be married or single, own their own home or rent. They
do not need to have previous medical or nursing skills because all training necessary to care for a child is provided.
Medical foster parents must be able to work with; other professionals in the
community. Most importantly, medical foster parents want to love and
care about a child who really needs them.
What are these children like?
Children in medical foster care can have mild or severe medical needs. They
may have special equipment like a wheelchair or monitor. They may have asthma,
developmental disabilities, apnea, pre-natal exposure to
drugs and alcohol or other medical diagnoses. They can be newborn
infants or older children. They are children who are medically ready
to experience family life with you.
All training, medical supplies and equipment needed to care for your medically
needy foster child will be provided. Respite is available and medical program
staff will provide support to you during the child's
placement in your home.
Foster parents of a medically needy child receive training to meet the needs of
the child placed in their home. Erie County Office of Children and Youth will have 24
hour support available to you when you foster parent a medically needy
child. Financial reimbursement, as well as mileage and a yearly
clothing allowance. Personal professional nursing care can be
provided for the child in your home when state guidelines are met for the
service.
